The original copy of Riina’s “list” is now in the hands of magistrates in Palermo

October 29th – Palermo. A stack of about 40 sheets of paper containing the original copy of Riina’s “list” of requests to the State is now in the hands of magistrates Nino Di Matteo and Antonio Ingroia.
The documents were given to Di Matteo and Ingroia by Massimo Ciancimino who is testifying spontaneously at the Court of Appeal where judges are prosecuting him for having laundered his father’s fortune. Following an hour long conversation during which Ciancimino Junior asked judges for a just trial, the former mayor of Palermo’s son handed over his father’s documents which had been stored in a safe at the Liechtensteit bank. A letter, written by don Vito Ciancimino a few years after the massacre of D’ Amelio street accompanied the “list”. After his arrest the Christian Democrat politician (Vito Ciancimino) felt that his role in the negotiation between mafia and State had been undermined, considering that he had conducted the negotiation himself. Vito Ciancimino makes a few considerations and he audaciously compares his position to judge Paolo Borsellino’s: don Vito writes that both had been betrayed by people considered to be close to them. In 1992, Provenzano had, in fact, excluded the old corleonese mayor from the political renewal project which was taking place at the time. Paolo Borsellino, on the other hand was killed because he was “betrayed” by people he considered friends. It is now up to magistrates to evaluate and weigh the details contained in the documents. In the meantime Ciancimino Junior is defending himself in a trial that concerns the “Gas spa” deal (taking place behind closed doors). During the case Ciancimino was convicted in first degree to 5 years, 8 months for money laundering and for having falsely registered certain estates. This morning, following the hearing Ciancimino stated: “There are many strange facts surrounding my trial: documents which never reached the Court of Appeal, interceptions that become irrelevant and are not put on record. According to my defense these elements would be useful to support my case “. “ I want to be convicted for things I committed not for things I am not responsible of”. “The trial in first degree – added Ciancimino – is based on a preliminary position that sees me guilty”. “ Why was I the only one put on trial? My brothers were never questioned, why?” “ They probably knew about our family matters but, I was the main target”. Within the next few days some of the passages from the interceptions that were not put on record during the trial are going to be read by Massimo Ciancimino as he once again appears before a College of judges.
